Major Responsibilities and Functions

Introduction

The Health and Education Standing Committee plays an important role in planning, implementation and monitoring of activities related to public health, community sanitation, general education, sports and cultural development within the jurisdiction of the local self-government institution. Its functions are carried out in accordance with applicable laws, rules and government guidelines.

1. Public Health Protection and Healthcare Monitoring

• Disease Prevention: Coordinate with the Health Department to implement communicable disease control, immunisation programmes and health surveys.

• Waste Management and Sanitation: Promote the activities of Haritha Karma Sena, source-level waste management, cleanliness in public places and protection of safe water sources.

• Development of Health Institutions: Review the functioning of Family Health Centres (FHCs), Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and sub-centres, and support improvements in basic infrastructure.

2. Improving the Quality of General Education

• Educational Planning: Formulate special projects to improve academic standards and provide support to students who require additional assistance.

• School Infrastructure: Improve government school buildings, smart classrooms, drinking water facilities and sanitation facilities under the local body's jurisdiction.

• Coordination of School Committees: Provide necessary guidance and coordination to School Management Committees (SMCs) and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs).

3. Promotion of Sports and Cultural Activities

• Sports Development: Promote the construction and improvement of playgrounds, encourage sports clubs and support training programmes for local sporting talent.

• Cultural Activities: Support the improvement of public libraries and cultural centres, and coordinate arts and cultural programmes for the community.

4. Related Social Welfare Activities

• Nutrition Support: Ensure that children, pregnant women and lactating mothers receive appropriate nutritional support through Anganwadis.

• Coordination and Monitoring: Coordinate with the concerned departments and monitor the implementation of relevant health, nutrition and welfare programmes, as applicable.
